Founded in 1844 by Scottish immigrants who settled in Ottawa, Knox Presbyterian Church has played a significant role in the religious and cultural life of the city. It is named after John Knox, the founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Colourful stained glass windows compliment the beautiful Iona Mural, painted by the talented Molly Grendal who traveled to the Scottish island of Iona as inspiration. She kept the mural in perfect condition throughout her life until the very end — a true expression of faith.
Why is Knox Presbyterian Church so important to Ottawa?
Knox Presbyterian Church, a prime example of neo-Gothic architecture, is known for its notable clock tower. The church’s first home, designed by Donald Kennedy in 1845, was at Daly Avenue and Cumberland Street. In 1930, the City of Ottawa expropriated the site, leading to the construction of the current building at Lisgar and Elgin, designed by Henry Sproatt and opened in 1932.
Knox has a strong military connection, displaying the Regimental and King’s Colours of the 207th Battalion in 1919, which were originally presented by Major General Sir Sam Hughes on Parliament Hill in 1916. Memorial plaques honour those who served in the two World Wars.

How are Presbyterians different to Protestants?
Presbyterians adhere to Calvinist theology, emphasizing God’s sovereignty, predestination, and the sacraments of Baptism. Their unique church governance uses a system of elders (presbyters) and a democratic approach to decision-making, reflecting their belief in the Holy Spirit’s guidance through community. It’s a kind of flavour of Protestantism.
