Founded in 1844 by Scottish immigrants who settled in Ottawa, Knox Presbyterian Church has played a significant role in the religious and cultural life of the city. It is named after John Knox, the founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Located at the corner of Daly Avenue and Cumberland, it’s a three-minute walk to Confederation Park and only six minutes away from the main branch of the Public Library. Facts, Curiosities and Interesting Things about Knox Presbyterian Church
1. The church’s first home was at the corner of Daly Avenue and Cumberland Street.
The current building at the corner of Lisgar and Elgin was chosen in 1930 when the City of Ottawa expropriated the previous location. Designed by architect Henry Sproatt, the church opened its doors for worship in 1932. However, Knox’ first home was situated in Sandy Hill at the corner of Daly Avenue and Cumberland and was designed by Donald Kennedy in 1845.
2. The Regimental and King’s Colours of the 207th Battalion were displayed at Knox Presbyterian Church in 1919.
There are memorial plaques to those who served in the two World Wars, a reminder of the devastating nature of wars. The church serves as a symbol of determination to rebuild and continue serving the community. The Regimental Colours were donated by the American Bank Note Company and presented by Major General Hon. Sir Sam Hughes, K.C.B., M.P. to the Battalion on Parliament Hill in 1916.
